Buying Art

I remember the first time I purchased a piece of art. The experience was a little overwhelming and confusing to say the lease. With so many options and styles available, it can be challenging to know where to start.  However, don’t let the challenge discourage your from pursuing your art purchase.  Here are some tips that can help you navigate the world of art as a first-time buyer.

1.      Determine Your Budget. Before you start looking for art pieces, determine how much you are willing to spend. Art is available in various price ranges, so it’s essential to know your budget to narrow down your options. Knowing your budget will help you make informed decisions.

2.      Do Your Research. Before purchasing an artwork, research different art styles, artists, and even galleries. This will help you understand what you like and dislike and it will be easier for you to find art pieces that resonate with you.

3.      Buy What You Love.  Art is subjective, and there is no right or wrong piece to purchase.  When buying art, choose pieces that you genuinely love and that evoke emotions and personal feelings. Don’t be influenced by trends or what others say. Remember, you will be living with the artwork, so make sure it is something you love.

4.      Understand The Artwork.  Before making a purchase, understand the artwork’s context, its history, and its meaning. You can learn about an artist’s background, their inspiration, and their creative process.  Understanding the artwork will help you appreciate it more and give you a deeper connection to it. It is always nice to talk to the artist if possible. If you are unable to do so try to contact the artists directly. I provide both in studio visits and virtual visits with potential clients to help them understand my practice and to see various pieces that they may be interested in.

Buying art can be a fulfilling and enjoyable experience, especially for the first-time buyer.  With these tips in mine, you can confidently start your journey into the world of art. If you have questions regarding my work I am always available and as I said above I would love to schedule an in person or virtual studio visit with you.
